In your opinion, should I upgrade or just build a new gaming rig?

Hello everyone, I'm having a hard time deciding whether to upgrade my current rig or just flat out build a new one. I'm looking to upgrade my monitor to 1440p 144hz and that is what got me thinking about it.

Here is my current rig: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GBPb7P (with a 23" VIZIO T.V. as a monitor)

If I was going to upgrade it, I was going to replace the GPU for sure, either with a GTX 1080 (maybe ti) or with RX Vega 64 just because I like supporting the underdog. I was also going to upgrade my cpu to help with the high FPS, but an i7 4790k is still $250.00+ and that is used too.

Now I just threw this rig together, (I'll add more fans, just didn't feel like adding them in the parts list) so feel free to change it however you like.

If I do choose an AMD GPU, I would most likely get this monitor https://pcpartpicker.com/product/c298TW/asus-monitor-mg279q unless you guys have something different in mind.

A locked i5 will not be able to push a 144 hz monitor very well. May I ask why you have a 212 on your locked i5?

I know the fanboys are going to come after me but I suggest waiting for Intel Coffee lake as those chips will have 6c-12t and have the best of both worlds- excellent single threaded performance AND equal or beat an 8c chip's MC performance. It won't be long now as those chips are coming out at the end of the year.

Oh to answer your question why I have the 212 on my i5. The answer is when I built this computer, I was very inexperienced and I heard stories that the stock intel cooler is trash, so I picked one up

It's not a great cooler but a locked CPU will do fine with it :p

Anyway now you can reuse that 212 EVO for your next build so it's not a total waste.
