In your opinion, what is/was best MoBo for Socket A CPU's?

My old PC was a socket A Athlon running on a Gigabyte mobo that finally went caput after 8 years. I would highly recommend the Gigabyte model.

I second the motion for this board. I use it on a my old computer and it does things very well.

Do you have all of the other parts to build two systems? If you don't, don't spend the money on obsolete platforms. Sell the CPUs (3200+ Bartons still fetch a hefty sum) and get into a more up-to-date platform. This is especially true considering video cards (AGP vs. PCI-e). You may be able to sell one of the CPUs and use that money to purchase a CPU and MB combo for about the same amount!

Yeah I got most of the stuff for them, I am going to use em for network storage, and other OS's (Ubuntu Linux, Win2k3 Server). I am making a small home Hardware/OS/Network Lab for my CIS classes in school.

I had alot of problems with the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (ran with a 2800+).

I second that vote. I use one in my mythtv system along with an athlon xp-m 2400 [1.8GHz barton unlocked] (running at 9 x 200MHz at the moment).

It had it all. nforce2 chipset, great performance, marvell gigabit ethernet and 100mbit nvidia ethernet, lots of usb2 ports, firewire, sata fake raid.

I second using this board as I am using it in this machine now, I also have it's younger brother, the GA-7N400-L, both boards are still living and have served me well.

I used GA7N400 Pro until it dies on the 2nd year, and they gave me GA7N400 Pro2 Rev 2 which I still used right now. AFAIK Abit NF7 is the best Nforce 2 mobo.

Is there a big difference between the two?

The best one, imho, were Soltek sl75frn2-l or-rl. They were fast, and rock stable. the systems I built with them are still running good. But they are hard to find now.

Abit are good, as well as Gigabytes. I would avoid Asus, because their nvidia solution are not really good. They master much more ATI, VIA and Intel chipset, imho.

MSI K7N2 Delta. But you will be hard pressed to find any good Nforce2 boards. If you do they will be over priced. Be careful where you buy them from some resellers will send you used crap.

I have an old EPoX 8RDA6+ Pro that runs pretty good. Gigabit ethernet, 6 SATA ports, Onboard 7.1 Audio, etc.

Lots of BIOS voltage options, also supports FSB changes up to 600 mhz, although I'm sure the chipset would crap out long before that.... :lol:

Another vote for Abit NF7-S 2.0. Infact I just recently upgraded from that board. She definitely was worth every penny.

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe. Bar none the best Socket 462 IMHO. Solid as a rock.

Still using my NF7-S v2 with a 3000+ and an X850XT.

Can run Oblivion on med-high graphics at 1280x1024 and still get ~45 fps. (So much for buying a PCIe motherboard two years ago, 8x AGP bandwidth was never exceeded!)

This motherboard is rock solid, has a great BIOS, and can be picked up for about £15.00 on ebay. Hugely recommended, the best I ever bought.

Finally building my new system, so I need to know which is the best conroe futureproof+OC motherboard right now that does not cost £sillymoney.00!

The Asus A7N8X Deluxe was an excellent board. However, the Abit NF7-S V2.0 had superior voltage settings and selection compared to the Asus board, which gave it the edge when overclocking. The Asus was a good overclocker, but not as successful as the NF7-S V2.0. The Abit board was also one of the brainchilds of the one and only Oscar Wu. The same guy who went on to DFI to create the best S939 boards for overclocking.

On another note, the Epox 8RDA+. Another stellar overclocker like the Abit and Asus, but it was usually available at a better price which gave it an excellent price/performance ratio.

I finally got the GA-7N400 Pro2 Rev1.xx all together this weekend.

I am loving this board! It has no problem running in Dual Channel DDR400 mode (my A7N8X-X could not run in Dual Channel cause it could only use like 6 kinds of DDR400 to be in D.C. mode)

I love that it does PATA & SATA .. I can buy a WD Raptor now *weee*

The onboard sound is pretty good, it's better than the A7N8X-X's. Plus I can use the TOSLINK to my Yamaha TSS-1 5.1 amp! But its not DDL/DTS, so I have to switch it to Pro Logic mode.

The Antec Beige Tower is so heavy! Not sure what model or year it is, it only has green power LED and amber HDD LED, 4 CD/DVD bays, 2 FDD bays, 4 internal HDD trays, and a locking front door & side panel, no builtin front USB or Audio, no side panel windows. I think it's a VAR II SX1000 II Full Tower.

The PSU's fan is alil loud I might replace it with a Cooler Master SAF-B82-E1 80mm fan. I replaced all the Antec case fans with SAF-B82's.

The onboard AC'97 was nice to use the TOSLINK, but after playing HL2 the game got alittle choppy in areas. I installed my SB Live! 5.1 (SB0100) and no more choppy.

I am going to upgrade to a new sound card .. but none of the X-FI's are DDL/DTS certified for TOSLINK.
