I need help. I have tried solutions came up from Google to no avail for days now.

I did a clean install of Windows 10 a few days ago. Before that, I back up all my data to my external hdd until it's almost full. After the clean install, I was unable to access the external hdd. It does appear in device manager with no yellow exclamation mark, but not accessible through file explorer. The only thing that is amiss in device manager is Mass Storage Controller with the infamous yellow exclamation mark. But this doesn't happen everytime I plugged in the hdd. Sometimes the Mass Storage Controller doesn't show up in device manager but regardless, the hdd is still inaccessible. In disk management, this hdd appear as partially unallocated though it is actually almost full.
Here is the screenshot of the disk management;

I have tried;
- update, uninstall & re-install the drivers (disk drive, mass storage controller, USB controller)
- plug in to other USB port
- safe remove, unplug, reboot, plug in again
but none is working.
I haven't tried formatting for I need all the data inside and I don't have enough other storage to transfer them to.
Do note that the hdd works in other machines with Windows 7 & 8....

Anyway, I am using an old Toshiba Satellite M300 laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.00GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470, running 64-bit Windows 10. The hdd is Toshiba Canvio Simple 500GB, if that is needed.

Any suggestion is appreciated.

First thing is that you DID do a backup. Many people don't, so you are way ahead of the game.

What tool did you use to do the backup? Before you did the OS reinstall, did you check that the drive was readable? If so, what OS did you have before?
Can you try the drive on another machine, preferably one running an earlier version of Windows?

If neither another machine nor the same backup program will let you read the drive, try recovery software. Do not re-partition, re-format, or write to the drive in any way, as that risks making things worse. Start by picking up a copy of Recuva or other free data recovery software to see if you can read data off of the drive.

By 'backup', I mean simply copy everything from my laptop to the external hdd. I might used wrong vocab there..

The drive was readable on my previous OS, Windows 8. And it works just fine on other machine with Windows 7 and 8.
I don't have other machine with Windows 10 so I cannot verify if it's windows version problem.
