Incorrect parameter problem

I have an Seagate external hard drive that isn't working. I keep getting 1 of 2 messages, one says to format the drive, which I think deletes everything, the other says "H:/ parameter is incorrect". I've tried using a universal drive adapter and the power (or motor) works, the blue light on the adapter shows it's working...what else can I do? The external hard drive is USB 2.0. Please help!
