I have been looking at putting together a new gaming PC, but maybe my path should be upgrading in steps.

I currently have a Ryzen 7 2700 with 1060 6GB, in a SFF case.
I have a 1440P monitor, and the 1060 6GB actually does pretty good with the games I play, usually with some reduced settings. I would say I'm a casual gamer, but might like the better visuals.

My thought is to take care of the GPU first, maybe 9060XT. Or maybe 9070 or Nvidia 5070 (but these may push me out of my current case, something else I need to consider).

With any of these, am I okay with the CPU, for now at least? (Understanding it may be older PCIe, so I may not get the most out of whatever GPU I pick)

I'll have to pay attention to the power supply, if I need to upgrade there.

Thoughts/comments?

Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

You'd need to upgrade your processor as well in the event you go with either of the GPU's mentioned above. Your PSU will also be a limiting factor in your upgrade path.

A new GPU, provided your PSU is good enough for it, would be the most significant upgrade for gaming. Just make sure you get a 16GB model. The new 8GB cards are obsolete out of the box, don't even bother with them.

One of my own recently passed along systems had a 2700X. Where it was beginning to show it's age it paired REALLY well with a 1080 and later on a 3070 worked pretty well with it as well. It is my own thought that you get as good a card as you can afford while keeping a future platform update in mind and the performance of this card aimed at that system's capability.
