Indexing and Backups

Will turning indexing on/off affect the speed of performing a backup and creationg a system image?

You can try it, but I think indexing doesn't usually run unless the computer is idle.

To clarify, I recently turned indexing off and performance seemed fine except that the next backup and system image creation took a very long time (over 8 hours for @ 300gb)

Wow, that doesn't sound right. You might want to run a chkdsk against that drive and see if it turns up anything. Also, check your event log for anything out of the ordinary related to disks.
