My first color printer used a single ink cartridge containing all four types of ink. It was a wasteful design because you had to throw out the cartridge when the first color became exhausted.
I now have a printer that takes individual cartridges (Brother, takes LC103 cartridges), but suppliers seem to sell them only in sets. Right now I need a couple of magenta cartridges to match the spares I have for the other colors, and I can't get them. What good is it to have a printer that uses separate cartridges if you can't buy them separately?
