Info needed on RAID SSD and 4K gaming.

I am planning a new system and need some information as I haven't been keeping as up to date as I used to on hardware.

The first question is, are there still issues on placing modern SSD's in a raid set up? I'd like to put 2 x 1TB Samsung 850 Evo's in a RAID 0 setup, but I don't know if the RAID issues have been fixed nowadays. (Something to do with TRIM iirc)

The second question is about 4K gaming. I'm planning on putting 3 x GTX 980's into SLI for 4K gaming, but I have heard there are still teething troubles with gaming at this resolution. What exactly are the issues?

I can't answer your question about the SSD, but I can with 4k :) 3x 980s would be good enough to play games at 4k at high or maybe ultra, but probably 4 for ultra. As for issues, I think most complaints are UI because the texts are so small, I just fixed that by increasing the DPI to 200%. Other than that, I'm not sure what other issues are there, not for me anyways. I was also planning to put my 2TB of 850 together, but someone said there's a risk (I don't know anything about RAID) So I skipped it, it is already fast enough for me :)

Since you have enough $ for 3x 980s, why not get 2x 295x2 instead and you'll have 4 GPUs in the size of 2 :) Unless you want/need Nvidia features for whatever.

Raid 0 is not very safe. What I would do is get a 3 TB hdd and have your SSDs back up to that nightly. Or just put them in Raid 1.

Thanks for the info in the 4K gaming. I hadn't considered actually trying to read text or UI's at that rez, however your DPI solution sounds like the way to go. Either that, or a monster screen. XD

I have used both Nvidia and AMD cards over the last few years (I'm using AMD atm), and I prefer the drivers for the Nvidia cards. Hardware wise I haven't seen any real world differences between the two horses, so it is a cosmetic decision on my part really. :)

As for the speed increase with the raid set up, I was actually more interested in the combined capacity of the drives than more speed (Although I won't complain about it. :D ). I could use them as separate drives, but I'd just like to have one large drive showing in windows. Again a mostly cosmetic wish on my part. :)

The issue with putting them in RAID (from what my old and fuzzy memory can recall) was something to do with TRIM not working correctly and the drives slowing down quite a bit over time.

Well, right now the 295x2 is the best for 4k gaming. I have 2 and I play my games 4k@ultra with no problems, and they stay pretty cool too, only 55-65C even under that kind of setting. I have tried BF4 and FC4 and other graphical intense games and I have no problems with those settings. The graphics for FC4 is the best that I've seen at 4k, almost real :)

Edit: The new Omega driver works perfectly with my 295x2, I haven't had one crash of it yet, or anything else.

I save my important data to an external 4TB drive already, so data integrity is not a high priority for my internal SSD's. They will only have applications and games installed on them, so a drive going down, while a pain, is not the end of the world as I'd just have to reinstall the games and apps.

My whole library is digital download, and my saves are in the cloud, so won't lose anything but a day's worth of time reinstalling everything. As I said, a pain but not the end of the world. :)

Also, if you're going 4k, the DPI adjustment really depends on the size of the display, I had a Samsung 28 inch UHD monitor and I was only using like 150 or 175%, but now I have a 58 inch UHD TV 3 ft away from me, so I have to set to up to 200% to make it look "normal" again.

I am pretty sure more than one drive will show as one in RAID. I couldn't tell you much about trim, but Intel has said that TRIM works fine in RAID.

Thanks. :)

It seems that the issue has been fixed then. I thought it would have been by now but wanted to double check. Thanks for the info guys. :)
