hello i have a dell precision work station 450
2x 2.4ghz processor
1gb ram
win xp pro 32 bit

i am in a debate wether to upgrade it or build a gaming computer from scratch
at the moment im addicted to star trek online and a little dissapointed i have to run it on low def with my laptop

so was wondering if i am better off upgrading eveything or nearly, on my dell or to start again
but i dont want to spend too much either.

what i thought of doing to the dell

his radeon hd 4670 1gb graphics card (agp port)

500- 600w power supply (currently 350w)

upgrade the 4x ddr ram cards to either 4x 1gb, 2gb, ddr2 or ddr3 (which ever ddr card it will accept)

get a hold of the dell ram extension board it looks like a removable card like pci pcie agp ect no idea what its specific name is but found a picture of one and it gives an additional 4 ram slots (leaveing 8 in total) then put the same ram as the main board on that extension

possibly upgrade the bios to a more modern one (compatible recogmendations whould be great)

dont think ill need to upgrade the operateing system from win xp pro unless i can get xp pro 64bit very cheap (what do you guys think?)

maybe put a extra fan in to improve air flow through the casing seeing as the his graphics card has its own fan

if theres a way to over clock the board how to do it would be great

any ideas and helpfull tips would be great guys

NEVER post your e-mail on a public forum for the whole world to see. you're just asking to be sent thousand of spam. i suggest you remove your e-mail ASAP.

as for your problem: build from scratch. or buy a new one. that's the best bang for your buck right there.

no idea which Xeon CPU you have, but based on some google results of your PC model, it's damn old, especially since it's still using DDR1 & AGP slots. far, far too old for gaming. no amount of cash is going to improve it by much, that you're just so much better off getting a new low end PC.

no amount of RAM upgrade is going to cut it if you're still using DDR1, and if you're thinking of getting DDR3, you're basically required to overhaul everything and making yourself a new PC. AGP cards are basically obsolete, integrated graphics from a low end APU simply outperform it. and you definitely need to get over XP, especially this late in the game, for stability and security sake.

I second Hazle here.

It's much too old and restricted to the point that it would be impossible to play modern games on it, no matter how much you upgrade it. I'd recommend building from scratch. You can salvage things like the Disk Drive, Cables and Hard Drive from it, if you were that strict on budget.

If you DID decide to upgrade it, I have no idea if it would still be able to run STO or not. It would be better, but you would still likely be playing on low settings.

Remove your email, too.

might build one from scratch can make it to how i want
anyone know where i can get parts at a good price
aswell as the best cheap brands and high end brands to give me some ideas
and recommended mother boards both best cheapest and high end

also my laptop is a dell inspiron n5110 is there much i can do to it ?
just a idea 90% chance i wont upgrade my laptop the cooling on them is too poor for the purpose of continuous gaming

Laptops are usually extremely dificult to upgrade outside of increasing the ram or hard drive anyways.
You're better off building a system from scratch, make a new thread with your budget requirements, and a list of everything you need/don't need (like a monitor/mouse/keyboard)
