I've got a SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Platinum, and of course, I've run into the same "fun" problems with the card and the drivers.

I'm seriously considering dropping in the Hercules card, but on the Hercules on-line forum there's a ton of complaints about the drivers; everything from PCI latency issues to game lockups and MP3 jitter due to EAX. Most of it from people with VIA boards, but not always.

From those of you on this forum with the card, I'd like to get some freeback on the issue. I'm aware that many of the problems are probably associated with "normal" user errors ... and so, I'd like to separate this from any actual problems with the drivers.

Any of you guys running with Win2K or WinXP with this card and the latest drivers? And if so, have you experienced any difficulties with the card or the external breakout box?

I'd appreciate any valid comments. And no, after a year of waiting for Creative to get workable drivers out to the consumer, an Audigy is not in my plans. And I want a decent breakout box; I don't need all those wires running out of the front of the can. Basically it's the Herc card, or an Audiotek ... but there's a three hundred dollar difference in the cards with the external boxes.

I'm also open to other suggestions, but I don't want to break the bank getting a new card. I'd say that $400 is my ceiling ... and I'd rather do better than that.

I'm planning on running Cakewalk SONAR with whatever card I install and do a little MIDI recording.

I just got GTXP today poped it in, a little problem i had was windows 98se didnt see the drivers on the cd. I just downloaded the latest ones installed and so far it works great....

ive read some of those threads on the Hercules site and if you look at this one

http://forum.hercules.com/index.php3?pg=readmsg&msgid=57586&viewall=y&forumname=Game+Theater+XP

many people point out that all components have problems

the only thing i dislike about the card at first is that the headphone and mic plugs both need adapters and my card only came with one

still i can hear the sound difference in a second compared to my on-board audio

Thanks for your response!

Anyone else, especially those of you with Win2K or WinXP?

I've been using my GTXP for a while now. The drivers on the CD were a little buggy (can't remember the version, under W2k). Basically, I couldn't keep the sound card's control panel open for more than about 10 seconds. No other problems.

After upgrading to the next ones (and later to the 3.02 drivers), I have had a total of...let's see...counting the IRQ conflicts and PCI latency issues...0 problems
Great card overall.

Oh, I used the CD's drivers and three other versions (late 2.xx as well as 3.01 and 3.02 I believe) in W2k, and the two 3.xx drivers in WinXP. No problems with any of those drivers in either OS.

I've been using one for about a month with no problems. Win2K and 3.02 drivers. That being said, I haven't used any of the digital I/O yet and I've only tried using 2 speaker or headphone modes.

Thanks to everyone for the information. As I suspected, most of the issues appear to be related more to user error and/or other conflicting problems with the various systems than the actual drivers for the card.

I'll post back here with my opinion on the card after I get it installed.

Thanks again ...
