I am considering buying one of these cards, but how much more performance will I get from a reference 980 TI card, when compared with an overclocked 980 Strix? There is a price difference of $172 where I live, between these two cards.
a fair bit at high resolutions... the extra 2gb vram is huge... also the reference cooler tends to be easier to get a 3rd party cooler for so you can then overclock it yourself like a beast :3
Compare all models based on reference clocks. Don't even count on factory overclocks. Those are subject to change and have been for many.
But wouldn´t a 980 overclocked to about 1500 MHz, come close to a 980 TI reference card?
nope different chip layout, gm 204 980 to gm 200 for the 980ti (cut from a titan x)
And the extra 2gb of vram remove memory caps as a performance limiter.
And even the reference card cooler is capable of a respectable overclock to further push its advantage.
However, If you are only gaming at 1080p, you wont see the advantage of the vram on the 980 ti till another year gone.
So only under that circumstance, would it come close.
Your difference is likely to be 15fpsish on ultra 1080... but maybe an extra year or two usable lifespan. Its up to you if its worth the money.
