Input/Output Shield ASRock MB

Newbie Dave working on 1st build. I attached my MB with the I/O shield attached and no matter what I do it's not a perfect fit. The HDMI cable won't go in at all. I removed the MB and I/O shield and just installed the MB only and everything works fine. Is the I/O shield really that necessary!
No one will see the back of the case but me!! Tks for any input - DN

It does help with airflow and EMI. That is a big hole to have no airflow control or grounding. Sometimes those I/O shields have "fingers" that are supposed to touch the top of a port, but will be bent so they are over the port.

Solution
You are right about "fingers" over ports, a closer look at the shield shows there is a 1/4 inch bent finger just where the hdmi cable gets plugged in!! Tks for your help - DN
