My experience with this problem may help users.

Specs: Acer Aspire E5 i5 laptop, HP 24mh monitor (newly purchased) to use as a second display

I used a VGA cable from HP to laptop, inserting the end into the laptop, and both monitors go black, with the HP one saying "input signal out of range." Therefore, I cannot fiddle with the settings because I cannot see anything. I unplug the cable, and the laptop display shows up again, while the HP goes to sleep. Although there are tons of tips on this issue, I cannot try them out because I cannot see anything.

So, I had forgotten the HP 24mh came with an HDMI cable. I removed the VGA one, inserted the HDMI, and it fixed the problem. Both monitors came active, and I could adjust them for dual modes, extended or whatever.

My question: Why did the VGA not work and the HDMI did? Thank you.
