I wonder how many people feel the same way I do. I have all my games
set to the hardest possible difficulty level. I am the primary player
and am always tying to improve my game. Any other setting, as far as
I'm concerned, is a fake-out. As for bonus lives, I believe at least
one is fair and adds to the excitement of the game. More than that is
over the top unless it's a game in which all bonus levels include
recurring free men and there's no way to stop it.

What is YOUR difficulty setting for all/most games? Where do you draw
the line on free guys?!

Another thing, what was your 3-letter high score 'tag' back in the
days? Mine was, and remains, "ZAP" Is yours still the same? If not,
why did you change it?

Lastly, how compelling is it (if compelling at all) to continue adding
your tag to your high score even though you own the game? For me, I
think I will continue doing this forever (even if it gets wiped out at
the end of my playing setting by powering down). This came to mind as
I had just completed a game of Galaga and walked away from the machine.
The score wasn't great this time around, but I felt funny simply
walking away from the machine. How could I just leave the machine in
limbo, playing its wondeful high score music, asking me to complete our
transaction? Without much thought I went back and filled-in the space
like a Pavlovian Dog. There you go, it got me again. Ding Ding.

My AD machine is set to easy and 5 lives.Thats likely the only
videogame that i will own to change the difficulty on. I hate losing
and yet, I still love it even if it kicks my ass. On the highscore name
issue, mikes multi-pac has almost enough space for my entire name. I
have to say thats a pretty awesome feature. (its long enough to write
some nice insults/humor)

I guess the decision to make the games harder is easy now that we
aren't pumping quarters in from our mother's pocketbooks!
Difficulty is a moot point when the machine is on free play!

woohooo! i love this hobby.

RE: the multi high score table, I always intended to flash the nvRAM
with messages to appear until replaced by scores but haven't gotten
around to it, maybe on the next batch.

My high score initials were AAA (I know old joke around here).

I used to put my initials MBD in, but on occasion FUK if the game or
controls were in poor shape. Now it's DAD (I guess times change).

Steve...I set all my games on NORMAL setting with three lives(Most of
the time factory settings). I dont play 24/7 so I lose the edge and am
tested again when I start playing. The only game I can turn over is
ASTEROIDS..........but if I dont play for a couple weeks I lose the
edge and am tested again on it. The only game that I have on the most
difficult setting with only 1 life is PANG.......My tag was KJC and I
even had biz cards made and left them on the vids when I left the high
score. I knew a guy that had the handle ZAP in the early eighties that
we played Asteroids with...he was on Islip Long Island...be funny if it
was you.

All my machines are on default play, default free guys, taking .900 tokens
(to keep the full effect) my tag was simple enough "W M" (W space M)... Am I
the only lamer that used my actual initials??????

I generally have my games set to normal difficulty/factory settings. I have
a large age range of children in my house (from 15 down to 5). Most
gameplay is done by them and their friends. If I set everything to hard
then the little ones lose to quickly... easy the older ones play forever...
normal in most cases seems to strike a good balance.

Of course, all this moot since many of the games offer continue capability
with no provision for disabling it... with an infinite supply of quarters it
really doesn't matter how hard the game is (the exception being certain
games which if you lose your weapons in certain spots it gets MUCH harder).

I use DAD now... one of my kids is named after me... gets to confusing
otherwise :)

Nope, not me. However I used to play not too far away in New Rochelle,
New York. How he could have thought of such a unique 3-letter tag like
that is beyond me :)

Leaving your business card w/tag is amazingly funny! I guess you
weren't looking for any recognition at the time.
I've always wanted to flip-over Asteroids but that mean little #*&@#&
ship keeps kicking my ass. I don't know that trick well enough.

It sounds like you have a little arcade going on there Steve and you're
getting your bases covered. But one wrong dip switch setting and
someone's bound to go out of whack over there! I'd be careful :)

Speaking of an infinite supply of quarters, have you ever thought about
putting a change machine in there and actually locking the coin doors?
I am beginning to look around for a bill changer (no joke). I think it
would be a perfect addition to the arcade upstart I have going on here.

LOL The machine's shouldn't be on free play in the first place. What
fun is that? We need to lock the coin doors and pay to play. That's
how we'll get real enjoyment and re-connect with our
inner-poor-child-whose-entertainment-depends-in-that-one-last-quarter!
And we'll watch our skill level shoot up through the roof.

Steve...I dont play the hide trick for the little ship....I just zen

There's certainly reasonable logic in your decision, but sometimes you have
to consider the game involved.

I don't know if Bagman has a difficulty setting, but if it does, I don't
want to play that game on difficult!

Try Turkey Shoot on the hardest setting. I can't imagine getting by level
3.

As to my games, mostly set on factory default with a few exceptions (Turkey
Shoot easier). Robotron is set easier too, no special reason other than I
set it easy for a game night cuz I wanted the people to have fun with it.

As to way I signed on high scores, most of them only allowed 3 letters, so,
uncreatively, I just used "Joe". Although those Bally/Midway MCR games
(Tron) only allowed 2 letters if I recall.

I set the difficulty to factory on most games. Sometimes I mess with it
on robotron, set it to 9 or play the 5 man no bonus difficulty 5 but
otherwise 3 ships factor settings.

I use "EVB" and still do. Couple guys use to call me evil-B because as
soon as I would walk into the Captain video's and see that my 9999999
on joust beaten I'd beat it the next day, I guess it drove one
particular guy "SOL" nuts since he was paying someone to play the
machine and put his tag up. Pretty strange, he payed several top
players to have his tag in arcades all over the LA area at the time.
Anyway, good times.

Love these kind of questions...

I keep all of my games at "factory" settings. Like to have them the way I
played them. Also, quarters only in my arcade!
Gotta pay to play! Even though I have the can of quarters on the bar. Still
gotta put it in to play.

Really can't remember what my high score tag was but now it's "BUZ" yeah
yeah don't ask.

Anyway great thread. Keeping these old games alive is really kinda of kool.
Just had a friend and his kids over yesterday and they loved playing these
old pieces of junk.

Lol... I actually had them all set to use the coin mechs... It worked GREAT
for a while... until we started raiding the cabinets for milk money (no
shitting... damn ATM cards, I just don't use money any more) for the kids...
eventually they all ran out, hence the free play. I really should switch
over to token mechs and alleviate the probem... of course, the young ones
like sticking quarters in the cab's just as much as playing! (finally the
youngest has outgrown that for the most part.. although in general she is
the designated "quarter stick-er-in-er".

Unfortunatly, a change machine would probably just mean more milk money to
steal! (with 6 kids (and a few more foster kids at any given moment)) we go
threw a hell of a lot of milk money each week! (yes... we do shop at sams
club, but all you need to do is run out for a single day and bammo... I have
to come up with a whole heapload of milk money! God forbid that I run out
of bread and they have to buy lunch all together :0 ).

Okay, I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear the last sentence of your last
paragraph :) Anyway, how do you know how the difficulty settings were
when you played back in the days? Which brings me to something that is
a little disturbing: we were sorta being conned as youths. The machine
operators could set the difficulty setting to whatever they wanted and
we had absolutely *no idea* what difficulty we were playing. In fact,
I'm sure some of us had been used to playing and had gotten good at
that one particular favorite at a certain location, and then all of a
sudden we weren't doing so well anymore. Maybe we thought we were
having a bad day, or that our reflexes were dulled by something
unrelated, but maybe the arcade operator just increased the difficulty
setting!

What would have been fair is having the level of diffuculty posted on
the cabinet, or perhaps on the title screen of the game. I mean, even
pinball is more of a fair play. You can judge the gravity level by
looking at how steep the playfield is and can even correct it yourself
or with a buddy to raise the leg levelers a notch or two. Then again,
there is a good side to this which is that when we got good, the
difficulty was (sometimes) increased therefore making the game even
more addictive. If you think about it we were kinda like mice in one
big 80's experiment.

Factory Settings for me. I agree that a good deal of the gaming
experience is dropping in that quarter, never to be seen again. The
freeplay/quarter debate is a long standing one in my house. Presently
the games are all on free-play, as leaving a bucket of quarters out
didn't work since the quarters all got taken for purpouses other than
playing the games and having the game unaccessable is not a good thing
in my house.

I like the idea of using the tokens and I my have to convert my mechs
over to accept tokens. This way you get the dropping a coin in
experience and you can leave a bucket of virtually worthless tokens out
without having them dissapear (except into the machines).

Archived from groups: rec.games.video.arcade.marketplace,rec.games.video.arcade,rec.games.video.arcade.collecting (More info?)

That is a really powerful argument for using tokens. I have even used
tokens at various arcades back in the days so I might be able to swing
myself over to tokens. But if I don't, I might consider using a change
machine with quarters. Now, there's always the possibility that the
person will use the quarters for something else, but I have an idea:
What if, after inserting the bill, the change machine does its normal
thing and drops quarters BUT at the same time sends a signal to my
basement door and locks it, keeping the person captive for a period of
at least 60 minutes. That should inspire them to use those quarters in
the 'correct' place. Look, even if the person is uninterested in
playing games they will probably get so bored being down there that
curiosity will kick in and possibly make a classic gamer out of them.
