Insert waypoints in Flight Planner?

Using FS2004. I was trying to duplicate the route that Steve Fosset took in
his solo trip by setting up a flight plan to use in the GPS. The HELP says
that in flight planner I should be able to add waypoints in the Edit screen
in flight planner by just clicking on them once the flight planner has drawn
the route based on departure on destination inputs. I found I can ad them
by dragging the route line; but just clicking on a facility on the map
brings up a filtered list and clicking my choice in that list brings up a
detailed description but nothing adds it to the waypoints on the route.
Anybody know what I might be doing wrong? Also is there anyway to add a
waypoint in the GPS while enroute on a flight plan?

Thanks,

John

John,

You have to click on the route and drag it to the waypoint you want to use -
just clicking on the map doesn't create the waypoint. even then, FS2004 will
only let you put waypoints at known features on the map, e.g. VORs and NDBs
etc. Unfortunately, FS2004 won't let you create arbitrary waypoints. You
CANNOT add waypoints in the GPS (I'm pretty sure that's in the help file for
the GPS).

If you want a much better flight planner, try FSNav. Much more flexible and
also takes account of any addon scenery you may have installed. (Also FSNav
will let you create your own waypoints, wherever you like, whilst flying and
gives you a moving map of sorts)

Thanks. Its somehow reassuring to know that the reason I couldn't
accomplish something is because it can't be done.

Will take a look at that. Thanks for the info.

To add an arbitrary waypoint.
1. Create a flight plan from your departure location to your destination
location, and save it as , say, VFR TEMP.PLN
2. Open the new file VFR TEMP.PLN in Notepad, and add as many new arbitrary
waypoints as you want.
3. Save the file with a new more meaningful name, using the .PLN extension.

Here's the complete text of one such .PLN file to which I've added one arbitrary
waypoint which I named "Approach", at arbitrary location N44* 33.00', W79*
48.00'

The numbering of waypoints in the original text had to be adjusted to accomodate
the newly added waypoint (number 1).

[flightplan]
AppVersion=9.1.40901
title=CNC3 to CNL8
description=CNC3, CNL8
type=VFR
routetype=0
cruising_altitude=5500
departure_id=CNC3, N43* 45.40', W79* 52.19', +000900.00
departure_position=33
destination_id=CNL8, N44* 39.17', W79* 52.69', +000705.00
departure_name=Brampton
destination_name=Boker Field
waypoint.0=, CNC3, , CNC3, A, N43* 45.40', W79* 52.19', +000900.00,
waypoint.1=, Approach, , Approach, I, N44* 33.00', W79* 48.00', +000000.00,
waypoint.2=, CNL8, , CNL8, A, N44* 39.17', W79* 52.69', +000705.00,

Thanks John B for the helpful suggestion. Have added all my waypoints and
am winging it over Newfoundland with only 70 hrs left to go. Seems to work
like a charm. Now where did I put those milkshakes.
