As a college student, it is important to pinch every penny that I can.
I was wondering if I am getting a good deal on an inspiron 9100? The specs
are as follows:

p4 3.0 ht with 15.4 wsxga+

256 mb of ram

64mb Radeon 9700

24xcd-rw/dvd

60gb 7200 rpm hard drive

96 whr 12-cell battery

3.5 modular floppy

Any ideas would be grealty appreciated.

Thanks

Practically, this computer is far too large for casual portability. I
see these every day, the wide screen laptop being lugged around like a
suitcase - owning the owner. This is a desktop replacement with limited
battery life, barely enough to keep it alive duirng a two-hour lab or a
twice-weekly lecture. A Pentium M would be a far better choice for
battery life and portability and I will predict you will be much happier
with it - it will fit the normal lecture desk whereas the wide screen P4
will fill up the entire available space. And, that P4 is going to be
noisy with its fans on AC power. Your roomies might be offended at the
fan noise.

Nice machine but way more than you need just to write papers and take notes!
Looks like a gaming machine to me

Being a college student, I would suggest something different in the way of
LONG battery life.

Going with the 8600 may be a better option depending upon the amount of
money
you want to spend.

Also, look to see if you can get the educational pricing through your
college. Check
your college book store for information.

The laptop specs depend on your major. Majoring in graphics design may
require
a different laptop than philosophy.

I own (well, the company I work for owns, but I use) an Inspiron 9100. I
would totally agree with you regarding the size and weight of the unit
making it unsuitable for a student, and the battery life as well. But the
noise is not an issue; at least on my unit. It is actually quite a bit
quieter than my desktops. The fans do kick on occasionally, but even then
they're not intrusive.
