I am planning to upgrade my PC when Oculus rift comes out, but in the meantime I am hoping to upgrade my graphics card in my existing Dell XPS 420 to enable me to play elite dangerous. I figure if I install a GTX 970 now I can swap it into my upgraded PC down the line. Can I install a GTX 970 into that PC, which has the standard 375w PSU? Has anyone tried?

Current card is a ATI Radeon HD 3200 which shares the system Ram, original card in the PC.

I have ordered the new graphics card but it is not too late for me to cancel, so i would be really grateful for replies before it is too late.

THE PSU will be a bit weak for that card. The problem with Dells/compaq/hp is they usually have the most minimal PSU there can be, so while the card may fit and be able to be used in this, you will need to get a PSU upgrade to either a really good 450 watt or a standard 500watt.

All that being said, it may work okay with the PSU, it is a lower power usage card, it is going to be close but if doesn't boot up or you have issues you know why.

GOOD LUCK

Hi FIAN,

I too have a Dell XPS 420 which I upgraded with a 6850 three years ago.

I am also waiting for the Oculus Rift before I upgrade to a new computer but I am considering getting a 970 gtx for the time being. I play Flight sims too, mainly cliffs of dover and Dcs A-10. I'm interested in your experience of upgrading the dell to a 970 gtx and what performance increase you experienced?
