Install Win2K and Millenium

Who can tell me how to install Win 2K in Millenium. It will not install because Millenium is a newer version, and I don't want to reformat and install it from Win 98. Can I install it in Dos? Says setup.exe cannot be run in dos when I tried. What can I do?

Boot the win2k cd, and make sure you have some empty space for it to partition.

From dos you go to the i386 directory and run winnt.exe

From Windows you run winnt32.exe.

Here's a tip copy the i386 directory to the partition you want to install it on to, then go to the windows directory on the C drive and copy smartdrv.exe to the same drive as the i 386 directory you copied.

Now boot off a floppy navigate to the drive you copied the files to. Run smartdrv.exe you dont need any switches on it then run winnt.exe in the i386 directory from dos afterwards and you will be on your way.

If you dont load the smartdrv it will give you an error you can bypass but it will take FOREVER to do the first part of the install.

If you do it this way you will not need the CD for the install and windows will never ask you for the CD ever again, and installs generaly go faster as well.

So I can install this from dos to bybass the upgrade files needed in windows? I want to do a clean install on drive d, so really I dont need to install in in windows, right?

If you do what i say you will end up with a dual boot system, winME will reside on C: and win2k will reside on D: or what ever partition you choose. When the computer starts you will have a menu pop up and ask you what OS you want to boot too.

You will have your OS on C: totaly intact and you will have a clean install of win2k on its own partition.

And yes you can install win2k from dos just like i said

There is one problem, how do you manage to install 2K PRO on a NTFS partition under DOS? Your solution will work for a FAT 32 or FAT16, am I correct?

I have tried several time (WINNT.EXE, WINNT32.EXE, BOOTUP FROM CDROM ETC) to install WIN2K PROFESSIONAL under WINME in vain. I always receive a message "WIN 2K SETUP COULD NOT DETECT THE VERSIONS OF WINDOWS YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING. SETUP CAN NOT CONTINUE." However, I can install Win2K adv server under ME without any problem. I am wondering if I can use Win2K adv server as a Workstation OS instead of WIN2K Pro. Will the performance of the ADV server be slower than 2K PRO?

MAIN APPLICATIONS:
3D MODELING, GRAPHICS AND VIDEO EDITING.

THIS COMPUTER IS SETUP AS A MAIN WORKSTATION WHERE OTHER TWO COMPUTERS (DUAL PII 266 DESKTOP, AND PIII 700 LAPTOP) IS HOOK UP THROUGH A HUB FOR PRINTER AND SCANNER SHARING.

Yes you are correct, my solution is only for FAT and FAT32, you can convert fat to NTFS easily though after you get installed, or even during the installation itself. The original poster was going from a WinME install to a dual boot scenario thats why i told him to do it under DOS. He would only be using a FAT system under WinME

To convert to NTFS after install from the runline type convert (driveletter):/FS:NTFS

If its on your boot or system partition it will need a restart.

As for using AdvServer as a workstation i would advise against it, Reason being is even though all of the Win2k family shares 85% of the same code the server products are tuned differently. They are designed to push data out the back end not run applications etc... See what i mean? Theres more to it but this is the main reason. Granted you can do some clustering and have 8 processors under AdvServer your probably not going to use this for a workstation, This isnt even considering the cost of the software.
