I just got a new SSD drive and I want to do a clean install of windows 7 on it. I have read that in order to do this you have to unplug your old hard drive.

If I unplug the old drive, I won't have a place to insert the Windows 7 disk, so how can I do a clean install without being able to use the disk?

you can have everything plugged in just go to bios and set boot order to your optical drive first, followerd by the ssd
after installing windows change the boot order to ssd first and disable other boot options for even faster boot ;o

I think you're confused. I always disconnect my old HDD when installing a new boot drive including an SSD. Your W7 disk will go into your optical disk which does not need to be disconnected. You will need to be sure the optical is ahead of the HDD or SSD in the boot order sequence in the BIOS.
