I want to install windows 8 using a key from Microsofsoftwareswap. I have currently connected a very old HDD with windows 7 from an old laptop to my build, and want to install windows 8 on an SSD I have also connected to the new PC.

now before I buy a key I would like to know if I can select to install the OS on that new SSD or if it automatically installs it on the old HDD, which would be a waste of money. if so, is there any way to move windows to the new SSD? I cannot find anything useful online unfortunately.

Solution
Upgrade from 7 to 10 on the HDD The free upgrade.
Once the upgrade is done, you can then download a win 10 ISO, put it on a disk, and then do a clean install (of Win 10) on ths SSD.

I know, but the problem is that there is no OS on the SSD, so I cannot download windows. do you know how to transfer the old windows 7 OS to the SSD?

I know about this, and I don't care whether it's 7 or 8. if I can move windows 7 from the HDD to the SSD, I am happy since I can just upgrade to windows 10. if this is however not possible, I will want to buy windows 8, which I slightly prefer over windows 10. so I want to know if I can actually install this on a different drive or if it only updates the drive that is currenlty running the OS, since I don't want to buy a key only to discover I cannot install it on the SSD. and I don't want to buy a disk either because those are $120 as opposed to a $15 key from /r/microsoftsoftwareswap.

I hope this makes it clear.
