Hi, i'm wanting to install windows onto my new ssd with an external one as the setup. When i tried to do this it is making it another drive and telling me i can't install windows on partition 0. the only thing i did with the external is run the media creation tool onto it to create the bootable. it does launch the setup but give me the error i listed. I'm guessing i missed a step.

So you installed win 10 on the external ssd? That would explain why the external drive is showing as system as you are booting off it

That is slightly different that creating the installer. Win 10 can only install off USB or DVD, any other option won't work. Pretty sure you cannot use an external ssd, and from sounds of it all you did was install win 10 on it, not make the installer.

'partition 0' on which drive? The SSD?

How, exactly, did you create the install on this external drive?

I made the install using the media creation tool that windows provides, i installed it onto the external hard drive. plugged the hard drive in to the PC via USB and it booted into the setup. Partition 0 is on my main drive (The new 1tb ssd one)

The external drive is a 250gb ssd with a adapter to convert it to usb.

I can't even click format. When i launch the setup i only have the ability to click new, refresh and load driver. also my external ssd is showing up as "System" under type. It is now saying "Window's cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's bios menu." I'm not sure where the controller would be located to check if it was enabled.

When it asks 'where', select Custom.
You should be presented with a list of all existing partitions on that drive.
Delete ALL of them, leaving one large blank space.
Format that (GPT), and let the OS install continue.
