Installation of a Radeon HD 6850

Hi,

I'm trying to install a Radeon HD 6850 in my existing machine.

The existing machine is as follows:

600w PSU
4GB DDR2
2 Duo E6600 CPU @ 2.4GHz 1066FSB 2x2MB L2 Cache EM64T
Asus P5N-E nForce 650i SLI Chipset LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2 Mainboard
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 512MB

When I boot the machine with the new card I'm getting one long beep followed by 3 short beeps and a blank screen.

I've been through the check list of suggestions on this site and a number of other ideas with similar problems in other threads. the most success has been removing the RAM cards, leaving one in and rebooting, that failed, but when I added a second back in again that worked? I did that last night, this morning with exactly the same config it's not working again, back to the beeps. I've booted with the old card and gone into the Bios and turned up the voltage of the ram to 2.0 that's not worked. I'm reluctant to bump this up higher for fear of damaging the ram.

Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved, I've not done an upgrade before and a novice when it comes to taking off the lid.

depending on your BIOS it probably means either
1/ you handled the system RAM sticks on the motherboard when you installed the graphics card , and static electricity on your hands destroyed the chips
[ which is actually impossible since it worked with the other graphics card ]

or

2/ theres a problem with the 6850 .
It could be damaged , or it could be that you didnt plug in the extra power connector . It needs that or it wont run .

Before you install it next time be sure to remove all traces of the nVidia driver , and nVidia software .

Then it will boot to a very low resolution screen. Running the driver disk will fix that

Thanks for this, I agree on the first one, the ram still works okay with the old card.

On the second suggestion, the power is connected, the fan is going round etc and I've managed to remove the old drivers (deleted them) boot up with the new card in a low res and install the new drivers. It then started with the beeps problem. I've then tickered with the ram cards and randomly (it seems) got it to work fully with the new card, drivers and everything. I turned off the machine, turned it on again and back to the beeps. I've been trying the ram cards in and out this morning but not been able to replicate my success of last night.

I've been thinking its the stability of the ram so used the old card to boot and go into Bios and change the voltage, but that's no good either although I've only tried it up to 2.0v.

Stumped...

Theres no way installing the 6850 can be affecting your system RAM . Thats not the problem since it works with the older card still .

It may be that some of the video RAM on the 6850 is faulty .

The fastest way to be sure is to try installing it in another computer .

Unfortunately I don't have a spare machine to try it on, so I think I will assume it's not working and return it.
