Installation [-peep-] up.. HELP!

ok.. i have this problem in installing windows...

i had ME.. but i wanted to format to switch ova to 98SE..
i didnt want to lose my mp3s and files so i booted up with the 98se boot cd.. and delelted the windows directory...
i did the same thing when i installed 95 to 98 so i thought it would work... but something is screwed!!!
everytime i try to install and right after teh first progress bar and right after it seeks the a: it create this lil black box which looks weird and i have to restart...
this happens for every os i tried to install.. 95, 98se, and me....
i cleared the bios and tried almost everything i coudl think of...
i think it might ber th fact i deleted teh win dir instead of formating... i really dont want to format.. but anyt suggestions?! please post anything relavent!! thanx!

Sorry,
but you're going to need to format.
winME puts os files in other places than the windows directory. it has the hidden restor directory that's probably messing everything up.

try to boot to dos and coppy everything you want to keep to another hard drive if you have one.

Please do not quote me on formatting your drive because someone might have been able to get around this problum, but Gut feeling says a format is necessary.
