Installed new gpu now windows says speakers aren't plugged in when they are

I know, I know, this has been asked before but none of the solutions I have read have worked, but we will get to that in a moment.

I have windows 7 ultimate 64-bit installed with sp1. I'm not really sure what system info to include so please ask.

I just installed a geforce gt 710 gpu (I was using integrated graphics before) and the display works nicely but for some reason windows now says that my speakers are not plugged in. I uninstalled the nvedia audio driver that came with the gpu, and reinstalled the other driver but neither of these helped. I right clicked on the speaker icon, selected playback devices, and attempted to set the speakers to default but that option was grayed out. I went into the bios under advanced / peripheral and sound was enabled (it didn't explicitly say it was the on-board sound but it was the only mention of sound I could find). dxdiag says it cannot detect an audio card but I don't know if that just means I don't have an external card. I am at a complete loss so any ideas would be usefull.

First check "Windows Audio" under Services to ensure it is running. If not, start that service and make sure it is set to Automatic.

Another possible problem is an orphaned sound device that is hidden.

Open a cmd prompt.
At the cmd prompt, enter "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1".
Then, enter"devmgmt.msc" to launch the Windows Device Manager Console.
In the Device Manager Console, from the "View" menu, select "Show Hidden Devices".

You will then see drivers belonging to devices no longer detected by Windows in addition to currently installed devices. You can delete the audio drivers known to not be relevant, or you can delete all audio drivers, and then reboot and re-install the latest audio driver.

a few run into this with NVidia cards [???]] I would try as you did but also uninstall the boards audio driver and just reinstall it ?

may try in device manager and look down the list of things for sound video and game controllers [that's how its listed in mine ?] drop down its list of things and find your onboard audio device in the list then right click and property's /driver then disable and then enable it back and see if that don't kick things back in ??

pretty sad to know a hardware can just go in and override ''YOUR'' set bios settings like that


google like NVidia card disables onboard audio and you will see a lot on this issue

Followed these instructions, there where no new audio drivers. Uninstalled the old ones anyway and restarted. Problem persists unaltered.

I did this and it had no discernible effect.

I have installed a many gpu on a lot of systems and never had this come up for me just installed a 980ti on a z87 and alls well and good


whats you system specs ?? like your motherboard so I can look up some things

Last thing I can think of...

Within the NVidia controller, look for and disable any "HDMI" audio option. Within that controller, you might be able to disable the NVidia audio driver altogether as well.

As best I can tell my onboard audio only has enabled and disabled settings, naturally I left it on enabled.

My motherboard is an intel DQ965GF with q965/q963 express chipset family.
Processor is Intel(R) core(TM) 2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz
I have 5 gigs of ram and direct x version 11.

Last thing I can think of...

Within the NVidia controller, look for and disable any "HDMI" audio option. Within that controller, you might be able to disable the NVidia audio driver altogether as well.

Alas, no such luck. Thanks anyway though.

just don't know over whats been covered and all looked at on line from forums with like issue ? in my 16 years I never experienced this issue here with anything I worked on for my self or others thing is you do see quite a few posts on it around the web

so if you uninstall all the gpu's drivers and shut down remove the card then do what ever like reinstall the motherboards audio driver still no sound ??

its hard to work on something when not hands on just cant see if something is being missed from here

looking at the manual here sad thing is nothing for anything about the bios settings to look over ?

that bios setting seems to be the #1 fix ?? I just wonder if you cleared cmos if that would ''clear '' things up ?

just remember after you do that your bios is all set back to default so any manual setting you did will be changed back to default

Well I feel stupid. On a whim I tried a different audio jack (one which had not worked prior to installing this gpu) and now everything appears to be all good. I have no earthly idea how installing a graphics card disables one jack and enables the other but there it is.

as long as you found a resolve and its working that what counts - but still if your plugging in to say the headphone jack to get speaker sound something still aint right in all that
