Installing 10 on a reformatted hard drive

Hey guys. I pulled out an old PC I had from about 4-5 yrs ago to fix up for my mom to use for internet purposes only. I reformatted the drive and went out and bought windows 10 on usb. Every time I try to boot up the computer with the windows 10 in the usb, it says invalid partition table. Do I need to just go get windows 10 on a CD? Or is there another thread i can read about my problem?

the reason for that is you need to upgrade to windows 8 first then 10

Reformatting the drive is not a step you need to take. When you boot up the Windows installer, the first thing to do is delete all existing partitions on the drive. The installer will make the new partitions that it needs.

You only formatted the existing partitions? Remove all the partitions and install to a completely blank drive.

My wife was out shopping so I got her to pick up a new hard drive and it says the same exact thing. So I have to buy windows 8?

Why. Just install Windows 10. You can use The Media Creation Tool to make yourself some installation media and just install Windows 10 directly.
