Question Installing 8 TB hard drive

Hi,

I am installing a BarraCuda, 8 tb sata hard drive on my PC.

I initially (accidentally) chose MBR and of course the size of the hard drive was limited to 2 tb.
Somewhere in there, I did a quick format.

I went to cmd prompt and using diskpart, changed the drive to GPT.

When I go back to Device manager, the volume has not increased.

I tried a bunch of things, like removing the hard drive, restarting.

Help anyone?

Even though you may have changed it to GPT in cmd, it is still not the right formatting.

Run that MBR2GPT I linked above, and see what happens.

Thanks, I can't, I have windows 7, it is not in the directory and the link says only for Win 10

Try cleaning the drive first.

diskpart​

list disk​

select disk 0​

clean​

convert gpt​

Right-click on black Unallocated area and choose create new simple volume.

This is AFTER you did the commandline diskpart and the clean command, listed above?

If you didn't do that, follow his instructions.

Try converting to mbr first, then convert back to gpt.

BTW - how is the drive connected? Are you using some kind of USB to sata adapter?

Not to go in a whole other direction, but how sure are you that this is a fully functional 8TB drive?

MBR format would give a max volume size of 2.2TB. Not 1.34

My motherboard has two SATA ports (cables). It is connected to one of them. I just bought it, is it fully functioning? I assume.

That would only be for the boot drive.
Secondary drives can be arbitrarily large.
