Hi all,
I have a Samsung 870 evo 2.5 ssd that I want to install in my fairly old pc (built back in 2015), which is based off of the MSI X99S GAMING 9 ACK motherboard. Last time I tried installing an ssd (samsung 860 evo 2.5 back in 2018) however, not only did windows not recognize it but I actually 'lost' an existing ssd (a samsung 850 evo) I had installed before that as in windows no longer recognized that ssd either. I took it back to the same pc shop I got the pc build from and the tech support guy said that all he did to get both ssds recognized again was a bios update to version 7882v2A from MSI's manufacturer support page for this particular motherboard https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X99S-GAMING-9-ACK/support Since I would prefer to avoid a repeat of what happened last time, I thought I would ask here if anyone would be able to comment on any major differences in firmware between samsung 860 and 870 ssds, and if another bios update would likely be necessary prior to installing my new 870? Looking at the different bios versions on the support page I linked, I can see that there is one new release after the version I have currently installed, however the release notes only mention fixing cpu overclocking for systems updated to windows 1903 and above and also that MSI does not recommend updating the bios to this version unless it is necessary. I mainly got this ssd to use with a newer pc build that I will be getting later this year but I was also wondering if it could be used in my current build in the mean time.
