i'm installing a new, but different MB, what's the best way to transfer the entire software system so it works?

Almost universally, any time I have changed a motherboard all of the license of various programs need to be re-entered or revalidated.
Generally WIndows 10 is pretty good about having a generic driver that will have everything come up in a working (enough) state to load the appropriate drivers. You should be able to swap/clone your drive and have it come up, although it's really not the best solution.

If the previous system is still operating I suggest you save all your personal files off to another drive/usb, compile a list of all your favorites and websites, bookmarks and just load your OS fresh install. It will run better.
Not a real bad idea to screenshot your installed programs either.
