Question installing a SSD in a HP580-023W pc!!!

hi there, my friend has an HP580-023W gaming pc and he got an SSD to put in it. my question is, can he install the SSD without removing the HDD? theres very little to no information ,, even on the HP website of whether or not he has to remove the old HDD to install the new SSD or can he run both ? hes already installed the SSD into another sata connector on the mobo thats rite beside the HDD sata connector, but when he boots up it doesnt read the SSD?!?! please help!! thank u!!!!
