Hello,
I am about to upgrade my macbook pro with an SSD, for increased speed, and startup times - and was wondering how i could move my OS to the SDD as i want to keep the HDD for storage.
Right now the OS and all my stuff are on the HDD. I want to have the OS (and some other programs) on the SSD, while the rest on the HDD :)
How do i manage libraries? What do i do?

(I am going to switch out the optical bay with the SSD by the way - and i know that the optical bay supports data III 6gb/s - so that is good!)

And of course the SSD is going to be the main startup drive...

Many thanks! :)

What I'm going to buy
Samsung Evo 840 120GB [MZ-7TE120BW] ~80$
+
Optical bay caddy ~15$

Current HDD 500GB 5400RPM [APPLE HDD HTS545050A7E362 Media]

OS installed on hdd
Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
+
Windows 7 Bootcamp

Rest of specs
Intel i5 2.5Ghz | Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024MB | 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz |

Thanks again but, as i said the SSD is 120gigs and i only want the system on it :)
Can i remove the system from the old one - backup the drive (files with timemachine) - and then install the os to the SSD with a flash drive (yosemite)

You might want to look at this from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
You should be able to install the SSD and install the OS via an Internet connection. The link above gives specific details on how to do this. Of course it wouldn't be a bad idea to back up the files from your current disk first. You could then wipe the old drive and restore the files you want from the Time Machine backup. I'm not sure you can move just the OS from one drive to another.

Many thanks! This is exactly what i could do!
1.Backup the HDD
2. Install the SSD
3.Install Yosemite to the SSD

But what do i do with the old HDD? Do i wipe it and restore the files from the Time Machine? :)

Thanks again :)

Solution

I have the same computer as you except with Yosemite 10.10. How do you know the data II 6gb/s will work for us? Did it work for you?

I installed Yosemite yesterday, and absolutely loved it! (uses way less battery) - but i decided to ditch the upgrade to another time!
Thought that i rather upgrade my PC, than my mac!
Also, have a friend who has the same mac as us too - he runs a SSD at 6GB/s. Works fine for him!
But good luck on installing the new drive (if you do), i'll maybe do it in half a year or so! :)
