Im going to build my pc later tonight and then install the free windows 10. Once i get everything set-up can i just put my old drive in and will it activate my current windows? The drive (western digital 1tb) was from an acer prebuilt.

Solution
long story short:
windows 10 allows for one transfer of your license - this means that you can swap once

first get your key on your "old" device, open cmd and use this code:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

also check which version of win 10 you have (home, pro,...)

once you have it, you can use it in a new installation

create a usb installation stick here
