Installing another hdd

I have 500gb WDC SATA hard disk with OS on it and I want to add another SATA one. It will be smaller and I want to install OS on it. Note that I want to use both HDDs all the time (no disconnecting, etc). The thing is, are there any complications with this? Do I need to delete OS on the first one?

Why another drive that is smaller? Why put the OS on that?

Because first, bigger HDD started to get bad sectors. Sectors are on C partition and affect the system. PC runs awful because of it. I don't have time to make another partitions etc. I want to use other good partitions for storage, and new HDD for OS. Is this going to cause any problems?

Well....bad sectors indicate a failing drive. You can partition it off all you want...the physical drive WILL fail.

Disconnect this failing drive
Install the new one
Install the OS, and all your applications.
Later, reconnect the failing drive.
Copy whatever files (not applications) you can from it to the 'new' drive.


What size is this new drive?

I still need to buy "new" drive. Probably 320 gb or so. I know "old" one will fail eventually, but it has 12 bad sectors and has worked like that for about a year. I still beleive I can use it for some time and I want to use it untill it fails cuz it has 500 gb of space.

New drive. 1TB, $50 USD.

"I still believe..." = IT WILL FAIL. Anything that lives on that drive is subject to disappearing at any time. Like 5 minutes from now, or next year.

Buy a new drive.
Install the OS and your application on it.
Copy everything off that old drive, and wipe ALL partitions.
Use the old drive for temporary storage only.


Or, you could hope and pray.

I appreciate your help. Thanks. But, I am willing to take that risk as I will use old drive for storage of games, all important data will be on new HDD. As old hdd will be for games only, I won't be in any kind of problem if it fails, as it will erase just games, and it won't be any kind of catastrophy. My question is, will that kind of architecturet (new --> OS, old --> games) cause any lag or any kind of slowing down?

I'm just questioning why buying a 320GB drive? Not significantly cheaper than a 1TB.

But....having stuff on two drives...OS on one and games on another, is no problem, and no slowness/lag.
Assuming of course that drive is not dying. As it appears to be doing.
