I'm doing my first build so I have no reference for this.

My mobo is a

ASRock B660M PRO RS LGA 1700 Intel B660 SATA 6Gb/s DDR4 Micro ATX

and I'm installing a

Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770 M.2 2280 1TB PCIe Gen4

I'm putting the SSD in the M.2 slot under the mobo heat sink. The retaining screw for the M.2 SSD is also the retainer for one end of the heat sink. So the heat sink sits right on top of the SSD. Will that cause any issues or is it designed for that.

It is designed like that, or else there will be no way to retain the heatsink, other than pasting it onto the SSD
Make sure you tighten the screw properly though.

Cheers!
