Installing IDE hd's in Dimension 8400...

Hi, folks. I just got a Dell Dimension 8400 and I am pretty happy with it. I
had purchased a couple of hard drives (both Western Digital IDE drives)
before I purchased the system inhopes of adding to it. I found that the
motherboard has only 1 IDE connector and that is taken up by my dual dvd/dvd
rw drives. The single hard drive is cobbected via an ATA cable. Any ideas
how I might add my other two drives or am I out of luck? I would call and
ask Dell, but I have been stuck on the phone for quite a while and cannot
seem to explain it clearly enough to the rep on the phone for him to
understand.

best bet is to add an additional controller to use for your hard drives.
under $30. takes up a pci slot. make sure you have available bays for the
drives that you want to add.

Are those also available in IDE? The extra driuves I have are IDE as oposed
to ATA.

Same stuff. Different name. Same interface cable. IDE, EIDE, ATA, ATA33,
ATA66, ATA100, ATA133 are all evolved from the original IDE and coexist happily
with one another for the most part... Ben Myers

Installing these drives should not pose any problem, either as a second slave to
the master originally installed in the 8400 or attached to a Promise (or most
any other brand) add-on IDE/ATA controller card, installed properly with
necessary drivers... Ben Myers

Why don't you just return the drives and exchange them for SATA drives.

Can't return them as I've already taken them out of the packaging. I got
pretty good prices on them and I stupidly assumed I could just pop them in
the new Dell. Maybe I'll sell the drives... who knows.
