So i upgraded from a pentium E2200 to a quad core E8400.
After putting in the cpu I tried to reinstall the stock intel heat sink that came with the old processor i had. It uses a push pin mechanism.I can get 3 of the pins in but the 4th just wont go in.what should i do?

First off, the E8400 isn't a quad core. It is a dual core like your E2200. While slightly faster, the 65W E8400 can use the same 65W heatsink/fan as the 65W E2200.
To answer your question, I presume you have reset the 4th push-pin as you did the rest?
Is the problem that the push-pin won't go thru the hole, or that the push-pin won't lock?
Can you provide a pic of the issue?

Ok so first off its a Q8400 not an E8400 my bad.Im sure this is a quad core. Secondly the white part of the 4th pin is in the board. Its the black header that wont go in and im afraid ill break the mobo with too much force.Itll be hard to send a pic as i would need to remove the mobo to reveal the back.

In that case, the E2200 heatsink/fan is too small to safely use. The Q8400 is a 95W CPU. It will overheat when pressed.
Did you fully turn the thumb tab on that post all the way CCW and pull? Then turn the thumb tab back CW before pushing the pin into the hole?

No, not suggesting that. But it might if the old cooler has a bad post that won't let it pass thru the hole. Either way, yes... use the larger cooler that came with the quad core (if indeed one came with it).

If still no joy, try to post a clear photo of the problem. Might be simply that the white 'fingers' are not collapsing after the reset.

Q8400 at 80c on aftermarket cooler? You must have done something wrong, did you even re-apply thermal paste? If yes what method you used?.

My 2nd PC Q8400 runs at max 65c after hours of gaming inside a HP Slimline case with stock cooling lol maybe your case fans are on the wrong side

Also use SpeedFan to set fan speeds to 100%, but you must configure it correctly otherwise it won't work.

your CPU is overheating causing motherboard to overheat too, apply the thermal paste again and spread it with a credit card across the CPU, also you need to get a better CPU cooler, because this one might be worse than the stock one. What's the CPU fan's RPM?

Could it be that my temperature sensors are wrong? This pc is 10 yrs old.And I've been running my pc like this for quite a while without any problems. Is there a way to actually know if my pc is too hot?

Ok so my case has a small screen that displays a temperature and its showing 29.5C. Non of the softwares show anything near to 30C. So is my cpu case temperature monitor wrong or the internal temperature sensors wrong.Btw my pc did overheat and i burned out my PSU 3-4 yrs back when i was using everything stock ( it was summer and i ran my pc the whole day).Could that burn out cause my sensors to go haywire?
