I have an 250 external hdd I want to install Linux Mint for its OS. I have the ISO burned onto a thumbdrive which boots up fine on the laptop. I can successfully install the Mint OS onto the 250 hdd using the thumbdrive GUI.

The problem lies with rebooting my laptop. I can enter the BIOS menu but the 250 hdd with the Linux Mint OS is not shown in the boot menu, only Windows 10 from the main internal hdd and the initial Linux Mint thumbdrive.

Note, I am using a SATA to USB adapter to connect the 250 hdd to the laptop. Would this type of connection run issues with detecting the external hdd in the BIOS memory?
