Installing microsoft office 2000 on windows 7

Hello,
I purchased a new laptop with windows 7 and had all my files from my old desktop transfered. I've tried to install Microsoft 2000 so I can use my files but whenever I click on a file, I get the following message, "required registry information is missingand this application cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem". The first time around I was asked for the 25 digit product key which I did type in. Now when I re-insert disc #1 nothing happens. What am I doing wrong????

i dont think office 2000 will work on a windows OS that is not NT based. i could be wrong.

Some good "free" alternatives are Openoffice and Libreoffice. If you don't want to buy the latest MS office .

I actually installed OFFICE 2000 PREMIUM EDITION (4 discs) on a customers Windows 7 machine yesterday... it all worked fine ...it WAS 32 Bit Windows 7 though...

Great attitude there sparky. Microsoft has stated that Office 2000 is NOT supported in Windows 7 (A less lazy person would have found that with a 10 second Google search). That may not be the answer you wanted to hear but that's how it is.

Hey Scooter, others have stated here that they have installed it without problems. Not just one, but several. Are you saying they lied or do they know something you don't?

It may work on one system and not another. If it doesn't work on yours then your out of luck. "Not Supported" means no help if it doesn't work.

"not supported" are your words. Other than you, I don't recall seeing anything that said it was "not supported". If you don't know, man up and say "I don't know". You wouldn't be the first person to be wrong.

You received 3 separate answers by more then qualified individuals.

Answers:
1) It is not supported. This is what Microsoft says, Will it work. Mayhaps. But on the norm I'd trust Microsoft.
2) Free alternatives. Libreoffice, Openoffice.
3) Installed on a windows 7 """"32 BIT SYSTEM"""" Verify that your system is indeed 32 bit. That might be the key, since when that software was written thats pretty much all that existed.

Truth be told... A lot of the members on Tom's are very very qualified individuals ranging from shop owners, to IT technicians, software developers and engineers. Not everyone is going to know every in and out of the IT world. There are Trillions of possibilities especially when it comes down to something as miniscule as an outdated piece of software (jerry rigging it) to work with a 64 bit advanced OS. I apologize that we are not on par with your expectations of the IT industry. You can always try Yahoo answers . Have a great day!

I faced the same problem of trying to get Office 2000 to run on a new Windows 7 system. I succeeded (in the end) and I hope my experience may help others on this forum. So here goes:

1. I have a new Dell Vostro 270s with a quad core i5 CPU running vanilla Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. A trial version of Office 2010 was bundled with the Vostro (this turns out to be important).

2. I tried loading my Office 2000 Pro software onto the Vostro but found (as others have reported) that the base software will load and run, but the SR-1 patch via o2ksr1a.exe won't load. This can be overcome by downloading the patch software as O2KSR1aDL.EXE, extracting the files and running setup.exe from the extracted file set. SR-1 should then load for you and run.

3. The next challenge is to apply the SR-2 and SR-3 upgrades sp2upd.exe and O2kSp3.exe. I couldn't get either of these to work, with error messages complaining that the SR-1 upgrade was not found. Aargh!! I tried this a couple of times and then gave up in disgust.

4. The next day I decided that I would give in to Microsoft and load a copy of Office 2007 that I had purchased several years ago at a big discount but never used because of the unnecessary (for me) additional features and menu changes. This turned into a nightmare when after getting a message confirming a 'Successful Installation' any attempt to run any of the Office apps generated an error message indicating that the installation was anything but "Successful". After this I found I couldn't uninstall the Office 2007 install because it was 'Corrupted"(!!!).

5. Now there is a lot of published information about uninstall problems with Office 2007 and 2010 and various simple and more complex solutions, of which I tried several, but still had problems with installing Office 2007. In the end the only solution I found was to use the Fix It uninstaller that Microsoft kindly provide in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 and then to use Run > regedit to purge the Registry of the critical Office Keys. The Microsoft documentation gives a lead on this but I didn't take out some of the low level stuff. When I had done this I was able to load Office 2007 successfully, and, after repeating the process to get rid of Office 2007 and all the Keys it puts into the Registry I was able to successfully load Office 2000 and all the Service Releases. A result!!!

6. In summary, all these problems seem to be the result of Registry keys which are not properly removed by uninstalling late versions of Office and which prevent successful installation of earlier Office versions. My brand new PC came with an Office 2010 trial so I couldn't install Office 2007, and when eventually I did, it in turn prevented me from installing Office 2000! Maybe someone can trial and recommend a Registry Cleaner that does the job automatically but otherwise following the Microsoft manual Key removal process will get you there - but what a struggle!
