I have an older system that I'm starting to have some problems with that I think are cpu or mobo related. Thinking about slapping a new cpu/mobo combo in it, but I realize it may not be worth the grief.

What kinds of issues am I likely to have with Windows XP and other software and hardware when I connect the existing stuff and try to boot up?

The existing cpu is amd athlon xp 1350 mhz and albatron kt400-8235 mobo. Two hard drives, a cd rom , a new dvd/cd writer, dsl and wireless b router. I use it mainly for web and to connect to my office pc.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've asked a similar question - answer was

you cant just toss the hard drive into a new mobo - yur gonna have to format the primary drive (whatever has operating system on it) and do a fresh install

Just out of curiosity - what are you current problems - if they are hard drive related you my be migrating the problems you are having as well

Thanks for that tip. I suppose I can copy the whole primary drive to the secondary drive and thereby have everything I might need on the system. Then format the primary drive and do a clean reinstall Xp.

Every thing is groovy once the system is warmed up. But if I shut the system down and reboot (or even just restart), it will spontaneously reboot several times before it stays up and running.

I'm afraid one of these times it will fail to reboot permanently.

sometimes those types of issues can be cause by a multitude of issues

my experiences so far have been (with VERY similar problems)

1. Power Supply was about to die (and it did - it also killed my video card when the power supply died)

2. Memory was bad (replaced memory and no more problems) you may wanna run Memtest - just google it

that's it so far - this of course doesn't mean this is your issue (end disclaimer)
