installing SoA and ToB

I'm not sure if I asked this before, because it's been awhile. Anyway,
I've finally gotten around to installing (and soon I'll be starting)
SoA. I have the bundle pack, but unlike BG1, this installation doesn't
automatically install ToB.

So I just want to ask if it's a good idea to go ahead and install it now
before I begin SoA, or if it will be better to wait.

Thanks!

You should go ahead and install it now, if for nothing else than the Tab
highlighting feature, which highlights containers. There is also an area
accessible from both SoA and ToB, but you won't want to go there just yet.
:) Also be sure to check out Icelus's list of mods. You will want the ToB
patch (ToB includes the SoA patch), Baldurdash, and probably Unfinished
Business and Item Upgrade. I wouldn't install much more than that for the
first run-through.

Thanks. The Tab feature is enough to convince me! :)

People will give you conflicting advice on which mods to install your
first time. Let me get in second: Don't install Tactics, Item Upgrade,
or Ease-of-Use your first time. Don't. Trust me, they'll alter play
dramatically in ways which not everyone cares for.

Thanks. On my first run through the game, I want to just play it
normally anyway, so I don't want to install any mods yet. But I'll
definitely install ToB before I start.

Actually, I would say that you, and perhaps one or two other people are
the only ones who really don't like ease of use. I've already pointed
out how the inventory fixes in ease of use are no different than playing
the game normally, but you continue to claim that they are "cheating".
I'm not sure why you are so dead set against people fixing the most
annoying problems with the game. You act almost as though the very
existence of such mods is a personal insult.

Actually, reading into Kish's statement indicates to me that those
particular mods aren't recommended for 1st time play, but a few are (banter
packs, romance, etc). The above 3 aren't cheating (didn't see Kish state
that anywhere) but an overly ham-fisted method of altering game play.

Thanks.

I didn't call them cheating, but Jonathan Ellis did a while ago. Graeme
would appear to have gotten us confused. Jonathan and I have had our
disagreements, but we do agree on the inadvisability of installing those
three mods for a first run-through.

RCV: Personally, I'd say that the most annoying problem of the game is
that it fails to follow 2nd Ed AD&D rules consistently - I never found the
inventory system to be either a problem nor annoying. Indeed, weightless
gold is more annoying [although not a problem] than a bastard sword taking
up as much "space" as a dagger..... IMHO

If I may add my five pennyworth I would say that the game is great in its
original form, that you should play it as that - with the latest official
patch and possibly baldurdash fixes only.

You may not play the whole game to the end twice but you are quite likely to
play again and then you can appreciate the differences that the mods make.

Yes and some of us need all the help we can get 🙂
I've played BG1 and about to play BG2 ToB and I've installed Ease and
Item Upgrade right from the start but I didn't install every option just the
ones to give a total Noob like me some help.
Whether it's cheating or not isn't a concern to me, I want to enjoy the game
and not get frustrated. I'm sure I'll even run ShadowKeeper to help get by 🙂
