Installing USB 3.0 driver

I have an acer v3-771G laptop with Windows 7 on it.

My USB was working fine for over a year. But lately it has been acting funny (will not recognize like any of my external drives in the sockets) so I am trying to reinstall the USB drivers. I downloaded the USB drivers from acer's downloadlink ((USB 3.0_Intel_1.0.4.220_W7x64_A)

But I can't seem to install the driver at all. I first tried to use the setup.exe that was included in the driver pack but that turned up an error saying that it was unable to install one or more drivers and it just quit.
I also tried to install the USB driver via my device manager. Under the "Other devices" nodule, I saw several USB controllers, and I selected one and clicked update driver => selected browse => pointed it to the USB 3.0 folder and it did "recognize" the Intel USB 3.0 extensible host controller but said "Access is Denied".
Please someone help me. I have no clue what to do now

I've never heard of anyone installing USB drivers, and I highly doubt you have a USB driver issue.

You might be looking at a dead external drive or a dead socket.

Ok. Well- both of my external hard drives aren't being detected by my Acer laptop computer. I had double checked under the device manager and disk manager and don't even see them listed.
But, to double check the drives, I plugged them into my desktop computer and they are detected and functioning. Now None of my 4 USB sockets on my Acer laptop detect the external hard drive. Before (like maybe less than a week ago), the drive would be recognized every now and then- it was flaky.

And also, I have a laptop cooler/fan that is powered via the USB ports. I know that the USB sockets are still giving out power as the fans are being powered
and like when i plug in my external hdd (which are both Toshiba canvios), I notice that the lights sometime go on or flicker. So i know that juice is getting to the drives (plus i can hear it whirring slightly every now and then). But they are NOT being detected by the Acer laptop computer. So i know its definitely a software (driver) issue.

Sounds like damaged ports to me. Could even be the cable you are using.

Again; I have never (since USB 1.1) seen bad drivers or any driver related issues with USB before. That laptop has USB3 and 2, see if you get the same issues on the USB2 ports.

If it's under warranty, I would just contact the vendor. Sounds like Hardware, unless you were doing something that would cause problems like this to arise.

You can probably find new chipset drivers on the manufacture website and try a fresh install.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the post above. "None of my 4 USB sockets on my Acer laptop detect the external hard drive" That means neither my USB2 ports nor my USB3 ports can detect the drive.
sigh And again, if I plug in the external hdd on really any of my 4 USB ports of my Acer laptop, I find pretty much the exact same thing- the light on my HDD either flickers or stays lit for a while and you like can hear/feel an occasional whirring. But it is NOT being detected by the system.

My whole initial question and post- from the very begining was trying to figure out HOW to install the USB 3.0 drivers for my Acer laptop Windows 7x64 system. Again see the above posts please

USB2 is generally operating from the BIOS and USB3 drivers from the operating system. They have separate drivers as well.

The fact that both of these do not work and use completely difference drivers, seems to indicate a Windows issue or a hardware issue.

You don't install USB drivers, they are part of the motherboard chipset. It's just a generic Windows USB driver. All USB drivers are the Same, it's the Universal Serial bus.

There isn't much else you can do, you can try sfc /scannow in CMD and see if there is any corrupting in the Windows system files.

It might be a virus, or more than likely, something is broken related the ports.

Issue: USB storage device is not working on my computer, be it a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 it just doesn't install the driver for storage device and my USB mouse and webcam does work.Everytime I plug in a USB flash drive of USB 3.0 External hard drive it beeps and gives error message that the device driver could not be installed.
Here is the steps I took to troubleshoot this issue and it got fixed.

go to Run-> Type Regedit.
and Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

Highlight this key ({36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} ), on the right pane, and then check if “Upperfilters” and “Lowerfilters” value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.


Restart the computer to check the issue.

Step 2. Now go to "C:\windows\inf" folder and check if these three files USBSTOR.SYS, usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf are available.If it was renamed change the name as I wrote them or if they are not available copy them from "C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3"
And then go to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Drivers" and make sure you have USBSTOR.SYS and usbd.sys available if not copy them again from
"C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3"
and paste it to Drivers folder.


Open Registry editor by going to Run-> typing Regedit and Navigate to the following key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR" and ensure that the Start value is 3 on the right pane

I've never heard of anyone installing USB drivers, and I highly doubt you have a USB driver issue.

There is no native support for USB 3.0 ports in Windows 7. 3rd party drivers (Intel, Renesas, etc.) are required. In this case it does sound like there is some other issue, though.

I had the same problem after rebooting my PC the keyboard and external hard drive wouldn't work yet after following various online 100% fixes it still would not work then by chance found a post that said swap your USB connectors around and the bloody hardware started working?I have no idea why.
