Hi all,

Im currently experiencing problems trying to install Win98 onto my newly bought system. I put it together myself and it consists of the following :

Gigabyte GA-7VTX
Crucial 256Mb DDR 2100
3dfx Voodoo3 3000
Phillips 404 CDWriter
Maxtor DiamondMax VL40 30.7 Gb ATA100

This is what I am doing,

Booting from Win98 boot disk
fdisk to create 1 partition
format c: - to format the drive
d:setup to install windows

When I get into windows setup it always hangs, either at the bit where it says checking space on drive, or i have been to the starup disk bit and it came up with an error.

Has anyone got any ideas as im getting really frustrated!! ??

Cheers,
Mike

Oh Yeah it also contains a AMD Athlon 1Ghz 266FSB.

Any ideas guys ?

Try this, after running FDISK instead of (format C:) try, (FORMAT C: /s) this will load the Win9x system files onto your HDD.

ok try this

once in the directory that contains the setup files (i.e. E:\win98 or whatever), type SETUP /IS/IE
the IS switch avoids scandisk and the IE switch avoids the startup disk, not a solution as such, but may be a workaround, but it SHOULDNT give you the problems you are getting, I'd try a general reseat (cpu, ram etc) before continuing, also it may be best to copy the WIN98 folder to the hard drive and run setup from there (you only need the WIN98 folder- not the full cd)

Oh, also, check the bios settings, back everything off (high memory settings etc) till you get it going, also check the voltage, and are you 100% sure its the 266 and not the 200?
