Installing windows 8.1 without formatting the hard drive

Solution

You'd have to make a partition, and install to that partition.
However.....as said above, 29GB is not nearly enough.
Yes, it will install. Now run all the existing updates. You'll find a Win 8/8.1 install to go well over 35GB.

Finally, important data with no backup? You are a drive fail or partitioning misclick from losing it all.

Very important data, I don't have backup. it's a 1TB drive with 29GB free.

I'm trying this because apparently my ssd drive has died (i'm still working on it and trying to recover), and I need something to work with the laptop

important data without backup? that tell me it is not important to use at all since you don't care if you lost the drive/data.

29GB? not enough. get a new disk

29 GB is more than enough for a windows 8 install, as it takes around 20GB of space and it will be for short use while i get another ssd.

You didn't answer my question. Does it wipe the drive previously to install?
