To give a little background: friend's computer randomly stopped working, and eventually the cable connecting to the hard drive basically caught on fire. We replaced the cables and the hard drive and decided to buy an SSD as well.

Now what we're doing is trying to install Windows into the newly purchased Kingston SSDNow 300 240GB SSD drive using a Windows 8 backup disk that I had ordered. The installation completed however it didn't boot up Windows and out would give us a "disk read error" everytime, even after trying to format and reinstalling Windows. We tried changing the BiOS settings from IDE to AHCI and having it boot to hard disk. Finally Windows came up when we changed it from AHCI to RAID and plugged in the HDD (because we were going to try to install Windows on the HDD instead for now). Windows loaded on the SSD successfully until we tried to install all the Windows updates. The computer restarted and now won't come back on, giving us errors like "an unexpected I/O has occurred", "the operating system couldn't be loaded because the kernel us missing..." and "the operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or..." all on a blue screen that says "Recovery."

He has a Gigabyte GA-H67MA-UD2H-B3 motherboard. We're probably going to try to install Windows on the HDD for now.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
