Installing Windows on an external CD drive.

So I'm planning on upgrading my system with a new Motherboard, CPU and a new case. The new case doesn't have any optical bays but I was wondering if I could install windows off a CD Drive that is plugged into the motherboard but outside the case. Thanks in advance.

You're talking about installing from an external drive, not on an external drive.
Yes, that will work.

Or, you can do it via USB. Much easier.
Assuming Windows 10, create your own USB here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10


Also, with the new motherboard, you will have activation issues.
