In advance: Sorry if this post is too long, or a repeat of a post that already exists (I searched but found none), or posted in the wrong category / sub-category. I don't usually have to ask questions on PC problems, but this one is simply too obscure.

To anyone with knowledge of or experience with this error,

I have been having this problem installing certain programs for months now and have finally come to the conclusion that the installshield engine, or whatever corrupted it, is to blame.

An example of the specific problem is listed below:

Error Code: -5009 : 0x80040707
Error Information:
>Kernel\TextSubstitution.cpp (920)
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (162)
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (557)
>Kernel\Component.cpp (1277)
>Kernel\CABFile.cpp (436)
>SetupNew\setup.cpp (837)

$18.0.329PAK
@Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (7601)
IE Version: 9.0.8112.16421

Note that the specifics of the program do not matter. Any program I attempt to install that uses the iKernel engine results in the same error message. For example, anything from futuremark, install or uninstall, yields the same message.

The only Idea I have is to completely re-install windows, but that would require the re-installation of more programs than I can count, though thankfully most are steam-apps that can be easily restored. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this issue without a complete re-write of the OS drive, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

OS info: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Seen this, Already have it set up that I always run the program as an admin. Checked all those registry keys and they look solid, but will check again. The other link posted there leads me to some Symantec product description. No idea if the trialware offered would correct the problem (I personally blame Norton for causing this somehow anyway; no proof, just hate Norton), but I am willing to give it a try. So far though, none of that has worked.

Any other ideas?

No dice. Whatever problems that the antivirus may have caused are no longer the responsibility of the AV program. My thoughts are that it corrupted the installshield engine previously, and that the effects are now the result of the corruption, rather than being a result of the AV program itself.

This is the most promising thing yet. Went through all the steps listed, and it actually did replace the ikernel.exe and associated files, but the problem persists. This is almost a sure-fire sign that some registry key or a random dll file somewhere on the machine has been affected. I appreciate the feedback and will keep looking for associated files that may be the cause of the problem.

Tried all of that. Got some interesting results. No spyware, and Glary didn't find anything specifically related to InstallShield, but CCleaner found keys pointing to several missing InstallShield dlls. Problem persists, so I now believe it to be a very deep rooted problem, most likely a missing or damaged dll file. No idea where to search for / find the problem. Just know that, while a lot of other things have been fixed, installshield engine V6 is still broken.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking at this point too. =( Well, been meaning to upgrade to an SSD anyway. Guess now that I need to do what is essentially a re-install of win 7 anyway (I don't have an image backup from before this problem started, nor do I know any way of repairing things otherwise) I now have the perfect excuse. Besides, my HDD has been making more scratching sounds lately. Gives me the feeling that its time is near...
