hi ppl,

I'll be setting up a pc today (actually in 3-4 hours) that's why its very urgent :). Just helping out a workmate but I never installed a OS with User-limitations in mind, the child is almost 6 years old and you know what that means. She's young enough to be controlled *g*, there is a lot of crap on the net (porn etc.) she shouldn't be able to see and also the OS must be protected from herself (hiding system files etc.). Also there are no "advanced users" in the family so the PC will be a new terrain for them, therefore I'll try to make it as easy for them as I can.

I'm sure here are many users with families, who are familiar with this. Here are the most important topics:
- User Account for the child (any tips are welcome, what would you do? like hiding "Run" or.. well everything you can think of - or did at home for you child)
- Internet limitations (I'm not sure how to use this "Zone-feature" in IE, how prevent her from accidently surfing to unwanted sites)
- Any applications that provide more features on this (like i said to limit internet acces, or maybe to make system navigation easier for the child, I dunno.. you should know :) )
- An Anti-virus Software that does everything by itself (like updating regulary). Note that the computer won't be online all the time so the updates can't be made at midnight like we do it in companies, also update-popups are not really welcome. Perhaps a self-updating feature if the computer goes on stand-by?

any other suggestions are highly appreciated too. Thank you for reading and helping me out.

this message will be postet in 3 forums at the same time to get the most feedback due to my lack of time. Of course I will be able to do changes later, but i hope to set up the pc today so its at least ready for use.

For now set up a separate account for the 6 year old to log into. Use IE explorers content advisor to block out some of the trash. I've never used it but there is some software out there that can be used block alot of bad content on the net now.

If you take a truth and follow it blindly, it will become a Falsehood and you a Fanatic.

Try Net Nanny. Its a good service. Also get a software Firewall and an Antivirus.

I only steal the princess cause she is hot ;*)

If you've never used NT before, it can get rather intense trying to setup up accounts and then arrange it how you want it.

I'd go with a seperate account for the child, and make it where the password is non-existant or a single letter. You might also install one of the norton 'net-nanny' programs, or the like, on that particular profile. BTW, even a 6-year-old can become a hacker. You might as well tell the guys about 'strong passwords'.

Thank you, Netnanny seems to be a good choice though several ppl suggested to use it, I'll try it out.
I'll also have to think over their "password-strategy" :)
