Here are my series of events to FUBAR my graphics card installation. (By the way, this site is great! Way better than NewEgg forum)

Details: Mobo- Asus M4A78LT-M
CPU- AMD Phenom II x 6
RAM- 8 GB DDR3
Graphics- Onboard ATI Radeon 3000
OS- Windows 7 Home Premium

I installed a Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1G GDDR5 pci-e card and a Corsair TX650W PS. Device Manager would not recognize the new card even after trying to install the software. I did a quick google search and found somewhere I needed to disable the onboard graphics through BIOS. Did that and now I have black screen through the onboard DVI and the Sapphire DVI. Oh yeah, I don't have discs and was in too big of a hurry to make a recovery disc. Story of my life. Thanks in advance for any help you guys may provide. Believe it or not, I have 9 builds under my belt. I bought this computer at Best Buy and wanted to upgrade instead of building from scratch to save some time. Again, great site w/ lots of good info!!!

Solution
Well the system should recognize the graphics card without the software so shouldn't be software issue at this point though you can always see if it will even load up using safe mode.

I'm gonna mention it... I know I know.. but did you make sure to plug in the power to the video card in addition to putting it in the pci-e slot?

To at least resolve your issue of no pic even through the onboard, go ahead and reset the bios using the cmos jumpers, look in your motherboard directions for how to do that lol. That won't cost you any data, just any custom bios settings you had.

Back to the new graphics, try reseating the card, make sure it has power plugged in.. at this point if it still doesn't work you've hit the hard part of...

Solution
Remove the new video card.

Plug monitor into old DVI.

See if it works.

But what SHOULD happen is that even if you don't disable the onboard graphics card the motherboard should recognize the fact that you have a PCIe card in, and use that one.

So, it is likely that you don't have the card seated or not plugged into the PSU.

I reset the bios and got back to regular settings. I reseated the card and made sure it was plugged in to one of the 6 pin connectors direct from the power supply. Still nothing, even after disabling the onboard graphics. In BIOS under Primary video controller their is a list of
GFXO-GPP-IGFX-AI
GPP-GFXO-IGFX-PCI
PCI-GFXO-GPP-IGFX
IGFX-GFXO-GPP-PCI

Does it matter where I set the above? While waiting, I will try another card. If it works, RMA the HD6870 to Newegg!

I'd try that option first.
