Hiya,

I'm getting the Asus Sabertooth Z87 mobo soon and I was wondering if anyone has used one and how they setup the two small fans that come with it and how they setup the built in exhaust and intake in the armor. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
You might wish to print this:
I have the Z77 version. Assuming it's identical:

1. The CPU fan controller is PWM only (Voltage fans have no speed control) so buy a CPU cooler with a PWM fan.

2. The case fan controllers should support BOTH PWM and Voltage fans.

3. The small ASSIST FANS have instructions to install, however they buzz annoyingly. Luckily you can turn them OFF in the Thermal Radar Software.
*I have the Assist Fans setup to turn ON only if it gets to 50degC (which it rarely does) and spin for 1 minute on shutdown.
**The profile would be "User" and you select "allow fan stop".

4. The case fans are also setup in the Thermal Radar Software. They can only be controlled if they are:
a) attached to your motherboard FAN1, FAN2.. connectors., and
b) variable fans (many case fans are one-speed only or have their own 3-speed switch).

5. You generally want at least ONE front intake fan (ideally PWM, variable 500RPM to 1800RPM) and another top-rear fan that's the same to exhaust air.

6. The best setup for the CPU fan (if using air) is to have a 12cm fan pushing air towards the REAR of the case and be exhausted via the case fan. Some push the air UPWARDS however this creates minimal air flow over the RAM modules.

Thanks, I'll check it out when it comes in. I'm not sure if the case fans are PWM or not because the case has its own controller so i assume it just regulates voltage and thats it.

The corsair cooler has software for it so ill use that regulate the cpu.

Did you rmobo come with the little heat sensors that you can attach anywhere you want?

My motherboard sensors are physically part of the motherboard.

I can't find any info that the Z87 has this feature. I don't even know why it would since it has many sensors all over the board.

Other:
While I like my Z77 Sabertooth (after solving the Assist Fan issue and turning them OFF most of the time), if I was building a Z87 system I would get a different motherboard:

The Sabertooth has the front and back protection which is mostly gimmick and requires the Assist Fans if it gets too hot.

The one I linked has far better audio (Asus SupremeFX) onboard and possibly some features the Sabertooth doesn't have. There's a video you can watch.

Either board is great, but personally I'd get the ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO LGA 1150.

Yea, I was looking at that one but there was no amazon prime free shipping for it so i choose the sabertooth. It seems like a great board once you figure it all out, lol. The z87 has extra heat sensors you can move around the board. I saw it on a Asus video on youtube where they do a total break down of it. I'm not concerned with noise because I usually have head phones on when I game.

The thing thats new on the z87 is that there is air control vents near the cpu which you adjust for intake or exhaust..... That was my original question. Hopefully someone here has the same board and knows about that feature. Thanks for the info!

That's explained on the motherboard website. Click "flow valve" in the proper section to see the explanation. It automatically opens or closes. The only reason it closes really is if you use liquid cooling and thus have a different airflow setup.
