Integrated sound problem

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right group for this question, but it's the
one with the most activity within the vicinity of what I want to ask
about.

I have a computer with a sis645dx chipset with integrated sound. I
recently had to format and reinstall (windows xp), and now the sound
has reverted to pc speaker.

My Device Manager lists an unknown device it calls "Multimedia Audio
Controller" that it cannot find a driver for.

I've been to sis.com and downloaded both the 7018 and the 7012 audio
drivers. The 7018 installs fine, but doesn't appear to do anything at
all. The 7012 hits an error point and won't install.

I formatted this computer only six months ago, and I can remember
facing this exact same problem, and solving it without too much hassle.
I just can't remember how.

I hope someone here can show me the way.

At the risk of stating the obvious,

Have you tried the website of the mainboard's maker?

For example, if you had an Asus P4S533-E (645dx chipset),

http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4S533-E

(click the "drivers" tab). While this can't be extended to other makers,
this board came with onboard audio from C Media, which I don't know to be
related to SiS.

Also, if you can find the installation CD for the mainboard, it ought to
include drivers. (They may be older than what's available on the Web.)

You were right. Thanks.

Although, why does realtek insist on giving you a bunch of useless
software along with the drivers? I don't want a sound effects manager,
or an avrack, thankyou.

Not long ago onboard sound didn't even support Bass and Treble controls,
now they have equalizers, sound effects, 3D, Surround sound, etc, etc,
and are still very cheap solutions. Of course those cheap solutions
still sound cheap and use up CPU cycles to do their work.

I replaced my onboard Realtek with an Audigy 2, I love it, but hell it
costs as much as the motherboard!
