Integrated soundcard or discrete soundcard on gaming rig?

what would give better performance in gaming?...Integrated soundcard or a discrete soundcard? and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a discrete soundcard?

onboard sound tends to be on par with high-mid level discrete sound cards these days
